Yup, that's the way it is with thermodynamics ... Yet, we must forge ahead. The word thermodynamics means "the movement of heat." Our task will be to define what heat is, then describe its transfer from one object to another. Along the way we'll develop the concept of temperature and of some thermodynamic "state functions."
